New Year, New Me…

Posted on Friday, January 2, 2009 in Browsing, Personal

…yeah, right.

New Year resolutions and I have a chequered history, so my plan for this year is to “just do it” (and probably get sued for trademark infringement while I’m at it!).

One of the things I struggle with is procrastinating, and social networks are a great way to waste time. On the other hand, there’s very few people I want to catch up with from school and I prefer the “old fashioned” tools of e-mail and RSS for keeping abreast of what my friends are up to, so without any further ado I have kissed goobye to:

Note that I have actually deleted the account, not just stopped using them.

identi.ca is on its way as well out as soon as I can figure out how to delete the account. You never know - dumping these might give me more time/inspiration for updating this site!

Happy New Year!

“Every Geek uses Gmail… it’s pretty much required.” FAIL. A real geek runs his own mailserver. # @codedragon: That’s fine. It’s the idea that anyone who has anything to do the web *has* to use GMail that winds me up something rotten! # /me wonders at the 1337 you need to be to “hack” a wikipedia page… http://tinyurl.com/5avfy3 # @newz2000: Surely a real geek would be concerned about privacy and so not trust the big G with all their mail… #

Scary. Plugged my printer in, and went to configure it. Before I could open the application an alert popped up saying it was ready to use! # …and it was! We’ve come a long way! #

@allenap: No issues apart from wrestling with Zope3 and Python 2.5 (which I’ve worked around). Ubuntu itself is running fine as 64-bit. # @codedragon You do? Wow. I’ve not written Perl in anger for *years*. It was my first “real” language though (if you ignore BASIC and Pascal) # @uupc You should have the page auto-refreshing. #

After *numerous* software and performance problems over the past few days, I’ve now got a shiny new 64-bit install of Ubuntu 8.04.1. # Unfortunately it meant finally getting rid of that old Vista partition on my laptop. What a shame… :)# Wondering what all the fuss is about Flash and Skype on 64-bit - they’re working fine for me with very little effort. #

Just discovered Tiny Tiny RSS and it’s sensible handling of duplicate items. I may have to install! http://tt-rss.org/trac/ # Uh-oh - managed to kill my e-mail client. Not good. # Mail client fixed. Phew. # Of course having OTA synchonisation between my iPhone and Google is only useful if, you know, they actually sync something. :(# OK, I lied. It’s not fixed at all. :(#
