Epic fail, but optimistic

So my attempt to listen to every LUGRadio episode ever failed big style. :(

However LUGRadio Live 2008 approaches, so the time for planning is afoot. My hotel is booked (as of today), and it’s time to get the word out about the event.

“No, we’re not ready…”

“…OK, now we’re ready.”

This year I’m going to attempt to join the annual LugRadio marathon - initiated by mrBen (pictured below) - in the build up to LugRadio Live (the original and best UK version, unless someone wants to sponsor me to go to the USA one).

I’ve already started with Season 1, Episode 1 “The Phantom Message“. Even though they’ve improved in both technical and professional terms over the years, listening to that first episode again reminded me why I like(d*) listening so much. Indeed I became their first official fan!

In the spirit of competition I’m going to see mrBen’s challenge and raise it by including all of hashlugradio as well. This is, of course, in preparation for hashlugradio Live 2008 - the event that allows LugRadio Live to share the same time, dates and venue.

* I can’t remember when or exactly why I stopped listening regularly. Maybe I’ll be able to spot it as I go through.

Sworn in the USA

Posted on Thursday, July 12, 2007 in Linux

I had a flash of inspiration about how the sworn in the USA tagline could look as a logo, and so decided to try it out.

If you want to use them, help yourself:

SUV (500px wide, PNG) Sedan (400px wide, PNG) Coupe (300px wide, PNG)

Here’s the source if you think it can be improved:

Engine Block (Inkscape SVG)

Bring it on

Yes, that’s my handiwork. So is the tagline sworn in the USA. I also suggested the land of the chin and home of the beard, but sworn is better.

No idea if I will get to LRLUSA’08, or even if it will be as good as the originals but the simple fact that a drunken idea has managed to spawn a popular podcast, an annual event and now an international event deserves to be recognised.

For the record the logo was created in Inkscape, and if you wish to pimp LRLUSA’08 yourself, you can grab some images here:

Super size me, 400×148 Regular, 200×74 Happy meal, 100×37

If you want to do some remixes – I’m sure the LugRadio boys will appreciate it – here’s the source:

Unlike the rest of this site, these images and source file are released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License. As Aq. rightly points out, these need to allow commercial use so that they can use them to promote LRLUSA’08 in good faith. Therefore I have revised the license under which they are made available (this is why Creative Commons is so good). I could have given the LRL guys separate permission, but this way is cleaner.

Not many people know that…

sebpayne setup a Flickr group for photos from LugRadio Live. He’s put loads in there, and I’ve uploaded some of mine as well, so go have a look.

LugRadio Live 2006 Day 1

Posted on Monday, July 24, 2006 in Uncategorized

I wandered down to the venue with fellow geeks to be greeted by the (very professional looking) banner letting the world know what was taking place inside. Actually I’d had a sneak preview of the banners and venue yesterday, but everyone else was suitably impressed. :)

The banner outside

I snuck inside to drop off my video camera, and got roped into helping by Jono. My task? Keeping out non-exhibitors. My reward? A bright (and I mean bright yellow t-shirt with word CREW emblazoned across the back of it). This also meant I was to provide assistance throughout the rest of the day, but in practice I wasn’t really needed.

Queuing to get in

The venue was seriously impressive with large flatscreens everywhere (a feature of the venue) displaying what was happening now & next, and a stream of photos taken by people throughout the day – I believe sebpayne may have been the biggest contributor of shots. There was also a 12’ screen on the main stage.

First port of call was the introduction by the four large gents, and then onto the show itself.

Blind to the competition

Posted on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 in Uncategorized

I received this in my inbox the other day (emphasis added):

Once again it’s that time of the year when we start cranking up the activity
for this year’s LinuxWorld Conference and Expo.

We’d be really grateful for your support (and for you to flag up the event to your members) as I’m sure your user group members would be interested in what’s going on at the event. We have a host of speakers from both technical & business background and support from the press; SOCITM; OFE; OSC; plus all the key associations. This is the only major event for Linux in the UK and we also have the .org village, a free seminar programme, The Great Linux Debate plus the exhibition itself.

The only major event for Linux in the UK?!? Have they not heard of the great gathering of geeks that is known as LugRadio Live? Which takes place this weekend (22nd & 23rd of July, 2006) no less.

Whilst I’ll concur that LRL is not of the same scale as LinuxWorld, it is still an impressive event especially considering it is almost wholly community based.

I’m planning on travelling down Saturday morning, returning Sunday evening and residing at the Quality Chin on Saturday night.

Unfortunately there are too many good things going on, so I won’t be able to see everything I want to. My definites are:

Ruby on Rails In Actuality BOF #lugradio Meet and Greet BOF LugRadio Live and Unleashed (of course) The Hour of Power—short demos of cool stuff

Beyond that there are various talks I would like to catch, but I have the feeling there will be many, many distractions!

I'm going to LugRadio Live 2006

‘Nuff said.

Why undersell?

Posted on Monday, July 3, 2006 in Uncategorized

In his latest post
Aq. talks about two new directions for the LugRadio offspring Jokosher of which both sound excellent.

However he mentions the release schedule for Jokosher:

the development of a plugin system is on the roadmap for Jokosher 0.2 (at the moment, we're in bugfix mode for 0.1, due for release in three weeks at LugRadio Live 2006)

…and my immediate reaction was “why 0.1? why not 1.0?”. I know the Open Source way is to release early and release often – which is A Good Thing™ by the way – but I do object to the way projects pick < 1 version numbers to indicate their maturity (or lack thereof), because they’re underselling themselves. One of the common complaints levelled at Linux and Open Source Software is that nothing is ever finished, and this is because a vast number of projects never reach that golden 1.0 milestone. It hasn’t stoppped them being in widespread use, but they still give the impression they’re not ready yet. Why didn’t they hit 1.0? Because they reached the point where they were ‘good enough’ and didn’t need to go any further.

If it’s good enough to be used by the others, then give it a 1.0 version number to show that. It doesn’t matter if it’s not complete – as 37 signals would say:

Build half a product, not a half-ass product

It obviously does something otherwise you wouldn’t be releasing it yet, so say that. If it’s not then you shouldn’t be – you won’t stop yourself or the early adopters from using it by doing this and in the long run you’ll end up with a much better first release.

Just in case this post does get misinterpreted in someway, I’m using Jokosher purely as an example here. I’ve no idea how ‘mature’ it is, nor do I have an opinion on whether they should or shouldn’t release it at LugRadio Live. I just don’t want the team behind it – or any other project – to undersell themselves.

My music selection makes last.fm look good
