My childrens school sent out a questionnaire, which we returned this morning. It was the usual stuff – Are you happy with the amount of homework? What improvements would you make to the school facilities? etc.

It was the final question that caught my eye though: Any other comments? A fairly innocuous question you may think, but I saw a perfect platform for me:

I would like to see more use of Free and Open Source software used in education.

I also added a note that I was happy to discuss this with them. Nothing may come of it, but on the other hand…

Excellent idea. That maybe what JetlagJen called "subtle advocacy". Teachers and/or education administration may or may not be interested by the concept, and you may want to make some kind of demonstration of what FLOSS can do for classrooms.

Edubuntu, anyone? ;)

Nice one, I suppose when you write something like this on an official suggestion form it might actually get somewhere, as opposed to general nagging which just seems to annoy people.

One thing to mention, diving into linux straight away might just confuse the children and/or teachers. Maybe just start using some open source software, i.e. firefox and OOo?
