Movies, Games & Videos

After a brief no-gaming spell, I find myself playing games once again. My CoH trial has expired, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to subscribe. I really want to try out Guild Wars as well, but this weekend I’ve picked up the game I’ve been waiting for… Grand Theft Auto : San Andreas. Although I’ve still got my PS2, I rarely play games on it now so I waited for the Xbox version to be released before picking it up. I’ve been a fan of GTA since the beginning, and I can safely say they’ve done it again.

Last night Mrs. Schwuk and I went to see Mr. & Mrs. Smith with some friends and as with GTA:SA I can thoroughly recommend it. Slow in places, but well worth watching.

Recently – thanks to Sky (One & Mix), E4 and Paramount Comedy Channel – I’ve gotten heavily into “Scrubs”. Fantastic series on so many levels. I’m (im)patiently awaiting the boxed sets to be released…

Faithful to the original

A long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away) I wrote about how I preferred books to films. At the time I said:

It would seem that seeing the movie before reading the book impairs my potential enjoyment of the book, yet reading the book before seeing the movie means that the movie will never live upto my expectations.

I also named The Lord of the Rings films as the exception to my rule. I would now like to add another to that list…

The Princess Bride

Years ago, I came across the film The Princess Bride and immediately loved it, but never considered the story behind it. Well just recently I picked up book and found the film to be incredibly faithful to the book. Obviously a large part of this is that the author – William Goldman – also wrote the screenplay, but even allowing for that very little is left out and what is missing by no means lessens the film. Admittedly my mental images whilst reading the book are heavily influenced by the film, but as with LotR this is because the film is such a good adaptation.

Scott Hanselman has a list of 10 essential tools. I knew about and used some of them, but now I’m pretty much using all of them.
